Heart Disease and Coffee.
Heart disease is known to be connected with elevated blood levels of both cholesterol and the amino acid homocystine. A study in Norway has found that people who quit drinking caffeinated filtered coffee had reduced blood levels of both these substances. It was first thought that organic substances in the unfiltered coffee may be the problem but several other studies have shown that filtered coffee also increases levels of these heart disease indicators. The indications are that filtering only partly removes the offending substances from coffee.
